The Affiliate Millionaire Myth

New prospective affiliates often fall for the notion that they will earn great sums of money by simply joining an affiliate program. Every day, newcomers to affiliate marketing will sign up, sign in and expect the checks to start rolling in. This couldn't be farther from the truth. While it is possible to make a living, even a great living online, it doesn't happen by simply signing up for an affiliate program.

Myth #1: It Will Happen Overnight

There is no such thing as making millions overnight.  Anybody who tells you that it does is either trying to get your money, flat out lying or another newcomer with no knowledge of what they're talking about. This myth is called the Get Rich Quick Scheme or Scam. Becoming an affiliate and making money online is do-able and easy. However, it takes commitment and work. Easy means that you will be able to effectively follow a system that will eventually lead to success. It requires work and study.

Myth #2: Success Will Happen Without Study

Like any business, the affiliate marketing business requires a certain amount of study in order to be successful. You will need to learn the ins and outs of the program, how to promote the products, what the product is that you are selling and the various ways to network for targeted visitors to your site. Easy money is a myth that should be avoided at all cost. Research the affiliate program that you are joining to find out if it's a scam or legitimate business. You don't want to waste your time, and online this is a fact of life. It is so easy to jump on the "next big thing" that you wind up doing a whole lot of nothing.

Myth #3: No Advertising Is Needed To Succeed

Some new affiliate marketers mistakenly believe that they don't need to do anything - if they build a website, visitors will come. Without promotion and advertising, no one can find your website. As a result, no visitors will come and you will make no sales. Building a beautiful website is great; however, you will need to invest in some advertising or write articles around the product to submit to article directories which in turn will generate traffic.

Myth #4: Too Many or Too Few Products

New affiliates will sometimes fill up their website witha plethora of banners, ads, links to websites and begging pleas to buy products. Nothing turns visitors off faster than when they get the feeling that they are being sold something - the used car salesman chasing the prospective customer. It takes time to build rapport with a customer, so if you add a ton of banner ads, your visitors won't be able to get to know you. You can ad some banners and links, but keep it to a minimum. Add a lot more quality content that is customer-focussed.

New affiliates will sometimes promote only one product, leaving customers with no options to choose from. Fewer sales can result because most people like at least three options when deciding to purchase. Too many or too few alternatives have a similar effect. They both translate into fewer sales and lower commissions.

If these four common mistakes are not addressed by an affiliate, they will most likely fail in their efforts to make a decent living online. For newcomers, there are all sorts of programs, ebooks, videos and web seminars designed to make them successful. Knowledge is power, and on the Internet that is doubly true.

If you are looking into becoming an affiliate marketer, be prepared to study hard, learn, make mistakes and read a lot. With each ebook read, program looked at and video watched, your income will increase. There are a number of success stories out there, but if you ask a guru how they did it and how long did it take, they will more in likely tell you they've been at it for years. Don't expect overnight success, but keep at it. Success will come with consistent, continuous effort.
